Metal Exchangeability in the REE-Enriched Biogenic Mn Oxide Birnessite from Ytterby, Sweden

چکیده

A black substance exuding from fractures was observed in 2012 Ytterby mine, Sweden, and identified 2017 as birnessite with the composition Mx[Mn(III,IV)]2O4∙(H2O)n. M is usually calcium sodium, x around 0.5. The unique, being calcium, magnesium, also rare earth elements (REEs) constituting up to 2% of total metal content. biogenic origin established 2018. Analysis microbial processes leading formation REE enrichment has continued since then. process fast dynamic, indicated by depletion manganese other metals fracture water during passage over precipitation zone mine tunnel. Studies exchangeability structure are main objective present program. Exposure solutions lanthanum, iron led exchanges altered distribution birnessite, however, generating phases almost identical structures after exchanges, no new mineral were detected. Exchangeability more efficient for trivalent (REE) divalent (calcium) monovalent (sodium) a similar size (ionic radii 90–100 pm).

REE-Enriched Mn-Oxide Precipitates in Water-Bearing Fractures in the Ytterby Mine, Sweden

The Ytterby mine, Sweden, is known for the discovery of eight elements, including yttrium and five of the rare earth elements (REE). The mine was in operation from 1750 to 1933 and was after closure used as a storage depot for fuel from the 1950s to 1995. A tunnel was opened in the 1950s through the bedrock into the mine to allow access to the storage depot. Recent water monitoring campaigns (2...

Microbially mediated formation of birnessite - type manganese oxides and subsequent incorporation of rare earth elements , Ytterby mine , Sweden

Microbes exert extensive control on redox element cycles. They participate directly or indirectly in the concentration and fractionation of elements by influencing the partitioning between soluble and insoluble species. Putative microbially mediated manganese (Mn) oxides of the birnessite-type, enriched in rare earth elements (REE) + yttrium (Y) were recently found in the Ytterby mine, Sweden. ...

Biogenic Mn-Oxides in Subseafloor Basalts

The deep biosphere of the subseafloor basalts is recognized as a major scientific frontier in disciplines like biology, geology, and oceanography. Recently, the presence of fungi in these environments has involved a change of view regarding diversity and ecology. Here, we describe fossilized fungal communities in vugs in subseafloor basalts from a depth of 936.65 metres below seafloor at the De...

Chromium(iii) oxidation by biogenic manganese oxides with varying structural ripening.

Manganese (Mn) oxides, which are generally considered biogenic in origin within natural systems, are the only oxidants of Cr(iii) under typical environmental conditions. Yet the influence of Mn biooxide mineral structural evolution on Cr(iii) oxidation under varying geochemical conditions is unknown. In this study we examined the role of light, organic carbon, pH, and the structure of biogenic ...

W...
